COMPUTER SHOW: Christopher J. Conley, sale manager for Digirex Microsystems Inc. of Cleveland, showed Heather Smith of Belleville a Digital Video Decoder format computer system Friday afternoon at the Super Computer Sale at the Gateway Center in Collinsville. The Super Computer Sale features more than $10 million of computer equipment. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and form 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6.50 for adults and free for children under 12. A $1 discount will be taken off the price of admission with a canned food donation for the Salvation Army.

"If they know what they're looking for and have done their homework, consumers can get tremendous deals here,'' says Sanjay Syal, president of Blue Star Productions of Minneapolis, which sponsors computer shows in St. Paul and some 60 other cities. ``Those who don't know what they're doing, though, should be prepared to ask questions, check prices and bring someone with them who knows computers.''
The shows offer mail-order or lower prices, says Syal. But buyers get to see the products themselves.
"Prices reflect the rapid obsolescence and quick depreciation of computer hardware and software," he says.
"That's what feeds these shows,'' says Syal. "Some people want the latest and greatest. But we sell used (75 Mhz) Pentium computers for $99. Who could have imagined buying a computer as powerful as a Pentium for $99?''
